French writer/director Christophe Honoré is a rarity, he's made musical dramas actually bearable for me. I thought the only decent musicals were rock operas like Phantom of The Paradise or Rock Horror Picture Show. That was until I discovered his films In Paris and Love Songs. They're amazing examples of how to mix smart independent film making with musical elements. Both films have dark dramatic themes, yet many uplifting moments. I highly recommend taking a chance on either of these films.
